Biographical / Historical

Born in New York studied art at the Traphagen Institute and at the Lourve. Lived in Europe, Key West, North Africa before moving to the Hollywood hills, California in 1936. Built a studio and kiln out of a former horse stable on her property. Bought a beach house in Laguna Beach. Began her ceramics business in Dec. 1941 and by 1942 had a successful line of ceramic dogs that sold out of her shop in Los Angeles. Retired to Laguna Beach in 1956 and remained active until her death in 1973.

Abstract

This collection consists of one document box worth of material from Jane Callender a ceramic artist popular in Southern California during the 1940s and 50s. The collection is largely photographs with some correspondence and a few examples of her business advertising.
